Further details about New Year’s Day in New Zealand
This is the first statutory holiday of the year and one that is celebrated worldwide. New Zealand has the honour to be one of the first countries in the world to celebrate the New Year.
The tradition started when the first settlers came to New Zealand in the 1800s. The problem that they faced was that traditionally they celebrated New Year in the middle of winter. However, of the immigrants continued to celebrate the holiday as they did in their home country.
People usually visit friends and families or take part in the various summer fairs that are held around the country. Many also spend the day relaxing and watching cricket.
