Further details about Taranaki Anniversary Weekend
This is one of five NZ statutory holidays which fall in March. It is always held on the second Monday in March so that it avoids the Easter weekend.
The area is overshadowed by Mount Taranaki, which is 2,518m high and very often the top is hidden by clouds.
The first European settlers came here in 1841 and called this the “Garden of New Zealand.” The reason for the lush landscape is the rich volcanic soil.
There are plenty of activities that a person can enjoy in the province. There are hiking trails, forest walks, and swimming in the summer time. Of course, for the more adventurous, there is Mount Taranaki to climb.
For fans of surfing, there are plenty of opportunities to surf along the 13km of coastline.
Some of the top attractions in Taranaki are: Republic of Whangamomona, the Wilkies Pools, the Pouakai Crossing, and yearly festivals. This is on top of regular sporting events, museums and art galleries.
This year the New Zealand Cycling Festival will take place during the weekend. Cyclists of all ages and levels of experience can take part.
The Taranaki Anniversary statutory holiday gives everyone the chance to take in the natural beauty of the NZ province.
