Why Is Buller Anniversary Day Celebrated?

West Coast was first discovered by Europeans in 1962 by executing the process of exploration, sealing, and land minerals. Then, entry of first recorded ship was made in the arena of Buller River which was sailed across by three brothers in the year 1844. They brought with them settlers and marked the arrival of early Pakeha settlers.

This anniversary is celebrated in five regions including Buller. The other 4 regions are Nelson, Otago, Taranaki, and Wellington.

Development Encountered After Buller Anniversary Day

In 950 AD, a Maori Canoe named Tahiriangi brought legendary chief Ngahue from the west coast to the south island. The name of Buller Kawatiri River is named after Charles Buller who was a director of New Zealand Company.  This is the river where gold was discovered in the 1850’s due to which the establishment of Westport was conducted. This led to the development of the extra-active industry which elevated the economic level. But later the focus got focused on agriculture, tourism, and horticulture.
