What caused the foundation of Southland’s anniversary day?

Southland province was first led on 1^st April 1861 after splitting from Otago province. In November 1876, the abolition of the Provinces Act was announced which led to the disbanding of the Southland Province and made it a part of New Zealand.

Later in December 2011, three southern majors determined that the southland anniversary would be celebrated on Easter Tuesday.

As history predicts, in the late 1700s, the first Europeans arrived on the southern coast of South Island belonging to the sealer community. It is said that the Maori arrived 600 years before Europeans.

Mori considered the north island in the shape of fish therefore they considered the farther north as fish tail and Wellington habour as the mouth of the fish. Maori settler was named further as Murihiku.

Later, the southern section requested a petition to the government to get separated from Otago. The proceeding got started in the beginning of 1857 and with the advent of 1861 government reformed the agreement and established the southland province.
