What led to the foundation of Chatham Islands Anniversary Day?
In 1842, the Chatham Islands were considered a part of southern New Zealand. This island had 10 islands in it amongst which Pitt Island was the largest one.
Some islands had farming land whereas few had preservative flora and fauna. These islands opt to be the most meagrely inhabited location on Earth.
This island is named after the first ship that arrived on the shore i.e. the HMS Chatham. It was navigated by Captain Broughton and finally arrived at the island in the November month of 1791.
The arrival of the ship is remarked as the initial phase of the anniversary foundation. But with the European sealer and whaler, the ownership of the island was declared.
Sealers and whalers are those categories of people who were fond of hunting whales and seals especially those who were a threat to their existence. Something worse happened, 20% of native Moriori died due to illness caused by Europeans.
Therefore, hunting of seals and whales was prohibited instead fishing turned into an important economic activity for the island. With this island started experiencing an increment in economic level. Later, islanders started exploring the export of wool. But, economic depression hit the islanders during World War II. During this phase, islanders shifted to the mainland where they carried out the exporting business of crayfish.
