Reason Behind Celebration Of Hawke Bay Anniversary:

The name of this island is after Edward Hawke and was named by Captain Cook. Edward was the first Lord of the Admiralty and he even served as the Admiralty Secretary. 

It was observed on account of the establishment of Hawke Bay after separation which is dated as 1st November 1858. The separation was executed from the region of Auckland Province.

This is accounted as a regional holiday as well as an off-work day before Labour Day. Labour Day is hosted on the 4th Monday of October month so you can consider that Hawke Day can be celebrated around late October.

Why called Show Day?

This day is commonly referred to as show day because the royal agricultural show is even celebrated on Friday. The royal agricultural show hosted by Hawkes’ Bay A & P Society, in Hastings is considered as the important event of the day. The series of performances makes sense. The competition of livestock like sheep, horses, alpacas, and many more makes the day interesting and full of vibrant energy.

The presence of food stalls and other activities adds additional charm to the occasion. Special days are there the commemorate special occasions like the founding and landing days of colonial provinces and are observed as provincial anniversary days according to the Holiday Act of 1981.
