In 1848, on the 23^rd of March, a group of Scottish settlers arrived on “John Wickliffe” the first sailing ship authorized under the Lay Association of the free church of Scotland.

This ship was led by Captain William Cargill to bring all settlers to Otago by landing at Port Chalmers.  All of the settlers wanted to seek a new life with fertile land and finally development of Dunedin bloomed with the thriving port city.
