The story behind the separation and declaration of the anniversary day:

On 26th September 1907, the colonies of New Zealand were granted authority within the British Empire. This declaration was supervised by Prime Minister Ward who signed the treaty in the general assembly library in Wellington.

The 1st Dominion Day was announced as a public holiday all across New Zealand and still today they celebrate this occasion. But in 1945, the dominion status of New Zealand came to an end after joining hands with the United Nations.

Since 1907, the royal proclamation of Dominion Day has been at stake and remained the same. South Canterbury is stretched from the Rangitata River present on the northern side to the Waitaki River of the southern region.

Canterbury province captured the centre of the south island until the west coast wasn’t split from Westland provinces to form the west coast gold rush in 1867.

Later, the south side of Canterbury requested a split in the 1860s but it went in vain. Today, south Canterbury celebrates this anniversary day on the fourth Monday of September month.

The overlapping of Dominion Day resulted in the official formation of Dominion on 26^th September 1907. Since this occasion is held on Monday so three-day day’s weekend can be enjoyed.
